Volkswagen Passat Intake Manifold

The role of the Volkswagen Passat Intake Manifold is that the clean air or air-fuel mixture is evenly diverted to each cylinder, ensuring that the power does not vary and the emissions are low. Within any current-day Volkswagen engine, there are runners through which the air flows from the throttle body, guided by a network of smooth runners that all have lengths selected to even exploit the Helmholtz resonance to sneak some additional pressure into the combustion chambers to give the engine superior torque. The Intake Manifold should be balanced so that all the cylinders breathe equally. Previous models of the Volkswagen, which applied either carburetors or single-point injection, allowed the fuel to mix in the manifold, whereas more recent models with multi-port injection inject fuel at both ends of the runner, and the new models with gasoline direct injection inject only air, demonstrating the adaptation of the same component to changing fueling technology. The choice of materials has also changed, where heavy cast iron or aluminum has given way to lightweight composite plastic, which dissipates heat rapidly, allowing the charge to cool faster and increase efficiency. Other designs divide the housing into upper and lower sections that are enclosed by small gaskets, since any form of leakage would cause a lean mixture and rough idle. Numerous V-style engines also pump coolant throughout the manifold and even contain the thermostat, which allows temperature sensors to pass data to the computer so that it can be tightly controlled. To achieve higher performance, trims can be equipped with variable-length runners that narrow down to provide high rpm power and extend to provide low rpm pull, offering the Passat a wide range of power without losing fuel economy. Overall, the Intake Manifold is an extremely important but versatile component of any Volkswagen drive.

Choose OEM Intake Manifold for superior quality and long-lasting durability. They match the Volkswagen's factory specifications exactly and pass strict quality control. Volkswagen Passat Intake Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall the intake manifold for V6 engines on Volkswagen Passat?
    A:
Discard engine cover and empty the engine coolant partially. Then, take off the throttle cable, cruise control actuator rod (if installed) and throttle body. Unscrew the crankcase breather tube of the valve covers and the back of the intake manifold and then remove the ignition coil pack. Take off the pressure on the fuel system and whack off the fuel rail and injectors. In the case of SOHC engines, do not have EGR valve to the side of the manifold. Label and remove all the other vacuum lines or electrical wiring that would disturb the process of removing the intake manifold. Unscrew the mounting nuts/bolts and put together the manifold and the engine, but on SOHC engines the upper plenum must be taken off first. Removal of gasket material during SOHC engines involves scraper of all traces of gasket material in the manifold and cylinder head, and of DOHC engines, an O-ring gasket can be removed by peeling off the grooves of the receiver on the intake manifold. Wipe the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone, and verify the manifold is not warped, in case the gaskets were leaking, and as such, they need to be replaced. New gaskets are installed in the receiver grooves on the manifold of DOHC engines, or contact cement is applied to the manifold face of the intake gasket of SOHC engines to fix them when fitting. Install the bolts, lay the manifold on the engine, and install the upper gasket between the platinum and the lower manifold, and the upper platinum on the lower platinum. Three or four equal steps to the given torque Turning the nuts/bolts in 3 or 4 steps in the same direction, outward to the center, to prevent warping. Install the parts in the same order of their removal, adjust the throttle linkage to a smooth operation prior to the start of the engine, refill and bleed the cooling system, run the engine to confirm the coolant and vacuum leakages and lastly, road test the vehicle to confirm that all the accessories are operational as expected, including the cruise control system.
  • Q: How to remove and reinstall the intake manifold and associated components for Four-cylinder engines on Volkswagen Passat?
    A:
Partially drain engine coolant and remove the coolant expansion tank by removing the engine cover first. In the case of early models, remove throttle and cruise control cables. Disassemble the electrical terminals of the throttle valve control module and the intake air temperature sensor and take out the upper intercooler hose of the throttle body. Discharge the fuel system pressure and take out the fuel rail and injectors. Put the upper coolant pipe of the engine and the throttle body coolant hoses out, also remove the oil dipstick. Label and remove any remaining vacuum lines or electrical wiring that would have been an obstacle to the removal of the intake manifold. Disassemble the throttle body and intake manifold: Removal of the intake manifold lower support brace, which involves removal of the bolts, then the mounting nuts/bolts are removed to separate the throttle body and intake manifold as an assembly off the engine. Remover any old gasket material and sealant off the manifold and the cylinder head using a scraper, cleaning the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Provided the gasket was leaking, the manifold should be adjusted in an automotive machine shop and remodeled where necessary. Install a new gasket, lay the manifold on the head and install the nuts/bolts and tighten them in three or four equal steps according to the torque specifications and the beginning of the installation should be at the center and then to the outside to avoid any warping. Install the rest of the parts in the same order as they were removed, re-check the amount of coolant in and add when needed, and start the engine to clear all possible coolant and vacuum leaks. Lastly, road test the car so that everything in the car is in working condition including the cruise control system.
