What are the functions and replacement processes of Vehicle Speed Sensors on Volkswagen Passat?

The transaxle has a sensor called the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) which is triggered by a toothed rotor on the transaxle output shaft and produces a variable voltage which becomes proportional to the speed of the vehicle as the transaxle output shaft turns. This input is used in the ECM to perform numerous engine and transmission control functions, and the signal of the VSS is also used to illuminate the speedometer at the instrument panel. A defective VSS may cause numerous driveability and transaxle problems. In place of the VSS, the first step is to lift the vehicle and place it on jackstands, the next step is to remove and disconnect the electrical connector to the sensor, the fourth step is to remove the mounting bolt and the last step is to retract the VSS out of the transaxle case. Once the sensor has the O-ring that has been replaced, it is installed in exactly the same order as it was removed.
