The air conditioning systems transform the hot high pressure liquid refrigerant in the compressor into cold lower pressure vapor in the evaporator that is chilled as the refrigerant passes through it to cool the airflow to be delivered to the vents. This conversion is by means of a sudden pressure alteration. Most cars have an opening in one of the air conditioning pipes in the firewall that can be removed, whereas the models in question have an expansion valve which plays the same role. The air conditioning system has to be discharged by a licensed technician in order to remove the expansion valve, and afterwards the refrigerant lines may be detached at the firewall, the two securing bolts removed, and the valve itself removed.
