- Q: How to properly replace Coil Springs on Volkswagen Rabbit?A:Loosen the wheel bolts and chock the front wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling, then raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands placed under the rocker panel flanges before removing the wheels. Following the tool manufacturer's instructions, install a spring compressor, which can be obtained at most auto parts stores or equipment yards on a daily rental basis, on the spring and compress it enough to relieve the tension on the other suspension components, which can be verified by wiggling the spring. Remove the spring along with the upper and lower spring seats, checking the spring for cracks and chips, and replace the springs as a set if any defects are found; also check the upper and lower seats for damage and deterioration, replacing them as necessary. If the lower spring seat is removed, ensure that the location pin is inserted back into the lower Control Arm or axle beam to center the seat. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring that the lower spring seat is positioned with the pin on the seat inserted into the hole in the control arm or axle beam, and the coil springs are positioned with the end of the spring up against the spring seat stop. Finally, lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel bolts to the specified torque.
