Volkswagen Transporter Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What do the previous tests confirm about the alternator's voltage and amps needed to charge the battery on Volkswagen Transporter?
    A:
The two previous tests have confirmed the presence or lack of voltage, but this does not confirm the presence or lack of amps needed to charge the battery, even if the warning light may go out. For the current output check, an ammeter with a range of 50 amps negative and positive is required. If an ammeter has already been fitted into the charging circuit, it will continuously indicate whether the generator is functioning properly. Disconnect the D+ cable from the generator and connect an ammeter in circuit, ensuring that the engine is not run with the D+ connection out of circuit to avoid damaging the dynamo field windings. Start the engine; at low speed, the ammeter should show a discharge, but at very low idling speed, it should move to zero when the regulator cut-out functions. At high engine speed, the ammeter should show a positive reading, especially when some lights are switched on to confirm a positive charge rate. If the ammeter continues to show a discharge even at low idling speed, it indicates that the cut-out is not functioning and current is flowing back from the battery to the generator, necessitating a change of the regulator unit.
