2013 Volkswagen Jetta Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the crankshaft seal on a crankshaft for 5-cylinder engines on 2013 Volkswagen Jetta?
A: Strip the transaxle then the flywheel/driveplate. Carefully pry the oil seal out of the back of sealing flange without nicking or scratching the crankshaft or the flange housing. Record the distance that it is recessed into the bore to be removed before it can be replaced to allow the new seal to be installed to an equal depth. Wipe the seal bore of the block down with a shop towel and wipe out all the oil and dirt. Grease the outside of the seal and slide it on top of the end of the crankshaft with the lip of the seal facing the engine. The seal can be used to press the new seal back into position ideally using a seal installation tool, otherwise a large socket, section of pipe or a blunt tool can be used to carefully press the new seal firmly down into the seal bore and even with the edge of the engine block. And lastly, install the flywheel/driveplate and then the transmission.
