The front seal is not removable as it is a part of the front sealing flange, and in case of any leakage of the front oil seal, then the sealing flange will have to be replaced. Start with removing the drivebelt and tensioner. Position the engine with the crankshaft locking tools. The second step is to take out the crankshaft pulley and the fastener-holding sealing flange. Beginning at the alignment holes, remove parts of the whole flange, then take great care to pull the sealing flange off the cylinder block, being careful not to bend or distort it, as it has to be replaced in the event that it has. Take off the sealing flange of the engine and ensure that the mating surfaces of the cylinder block are absolutely clean before putting on the new sealing flange. Clean the gasket material completely using a hard plastic or wood scraper being careful not to scratch the alloy of aluminum. Installation Slide VW special tool T40069 into the crankshaft seal and leave it. Put bead of RTV sealant (1/8-inch, or 3 mm) into the crevice of the sealing flange. Position the special tool on the tip of the crankshaft and then place the sealing flange on the engine block in a careful and precise location and the timing cover with the fasteners loosely installed. Manually tighten the flange retainers in a diagonal manner, then, tighten the retaining fasteners to the required torque. Turn the special tool off the crankshaft trying not to break the oil seal. Installation should be done by reversing the steps of removal followed by starting the engine and examining against any leakages.
