There are metric-size steel belted radial tires on all covered vehicles and the use of other sizes or types could influence the ride and handling. Combining tires of various types, i.e. radial and bias belted, in one vehicle can have a devastating effect on handling. They are advised to change tires in pairs within the same axle and when replacing one tire in a car, it is suggested to be of the same size, structure and tread design as the other tire. Handling and wear are greatly influenced by tire pressure and therefore the tire pressure should be checked at least once a month or prior to any long journeys. Bent, dented, or leaking of air, with long bolt holes, with a lot of rust, not in vertical straight lines, and that the lug bolts will not keep tight should be replaced, and it is not recommended to weld or peen them back together. The balance of tires and wheels is essential to the overall handling, braking, and overall performance as any mismatch in the tires and wheels may adversely affect handling, ride, and the life of the tires. A shop with the necessary machine to balance a tire should also do it whenever attaching a tire to a wheel.
