- Q: How to disconnect the battery and replace the timing belt and Wheel Seal on Volkswagen Cabrio?A:Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, ensuring you have the correct activation code for the stereo's anti-theft system if applicable. Remove the drivebelt(s) along with the drivebelt pulleys, timing belt outer cover, timing belt, tensioner, and intermediate shaft sprocket. After taking out the retaining screws, lift the inner timing belt cover away from the engine block to expose the intermediate shaft sealing flange. Remove the intermediate shaft flange and replace the shaft and flange oil seals. Next, install the inner timing belt cover, followed by the intermediate shaft timing belt sprocket, and then install and tension the timing belt. Finally, install the timing belt outer cover and tension the drivebelts.
- Q: How to replace the Wheel Seal on the drive flange oil seals on Volkswagen Rabbit?A:The drive flange oil seals can be replaced, requiring first that the wheel and drive axle/hub bolts are loosened, the parking brake is engaged, the front of the vehicle is raised and the vehicle is steadied on jackstands prior to removing the wheel. The second step is to remove a drive axle and unbolt the heat shield of the right side drive axle, with the inner fender liner potentially having to be removed to provide easier access on 6-speed models. Place a bucket under the transaxle in order to trap spilled oil. The drive flange is attached with a mounting bolt at the centre of the flange and to remove it screw two bolts into the flange, grip it with a pry bar and unscrew the mounting bolt. Once the flange and compression spring have been removed, record the depth of the oil seal that is installed in the housing and use a large flat-bladed screwdriver to pry it out. Wipe the counter around the opening of the oil seal and grease the lips of the new oil seal making sure that the sealing lip is in the correct position with the lips inwards before fitting it in with a suitable tubular drift with a pounding tool. In case the flange surface is fine, place the seal at the same depth during installation as it was initially observed. Wipe the oil seal and grease the lips and then insert the flange of the drive with compression spring and through the oil seal and then contact with the differential gear. Install the flange mounting bolt, install the drive axle, wheel, lower the vehicle to the ground and check and top up the level of transaxle oil. In the instance of the selector shaft oil seal, it is important to park and apply the parking brake, lift the front of the car and place it safely on jackstands. Pry off the locking nut and move the shift lever off the selector shaft. Using a small screwdriver carefully loosen the oil seal of the housing ensuring it is not damaged to the shaft or the housing of the selector. Wipe the oil seal seating and selector shaft with clean towel and run a grease of 2.5ml of multi purpose grease of lips on the new oil seal and fit over the end of the shaft with the closed side facing outward. To avoid this, put adhesive tape around the shaft end, and apply a suitable tubular drift to tap in the oil seal. Lastly, fit the gearshift coupling, screw the locking bolt and drop the vehicle to the ground.
