Volkswagen Cabrio Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the parking brake cable on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
When removing the parking brake cable, one needs to firstly remove the back part of the center to get access to the parking brake lever, which is made up of right and left-hand components connected by an equalizer plate and can be removed individually. Use a loosening tool on the parking brake lock-nut and adjusting nut to allow the cable as much freedom as possible and then detach the inner cable of the equalizer. Put a block over the front wheels, lift the rear part of the vehicle and place it on jackstands. Free the outer cable front end of the body and pull it out of its support guide, using your fingers. Follow the route of the cable backwards, remember where it was laid and release it of all its clips, until it is off the trailing arm. In models that have rear drum Brakes, loosen the brake shoes on the corresponding side and carefully knock off the outer cable out of the back plate of the brake and carefully take it out of the underneath of the vehicle. In models that have rear disc brakes, release the inner cable behind the caliper parking brake lever, the outer cable retaining clip, and cable behind the caliper. The process of installation entails the reversal of the processes of removal with the addition of adhering to the adjustment of the parking brake before the center console is restored.
  • Q: How to check the Parking Brake Cable adjustment on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
To test the parking brake set up, set the brake pedal several times, then activate the parking brake by pressing several times and releasing several times. With normal moderate pressure, press the leaver of the parking brake until it gets into fully applied position and count the number of clicks that the parking brake ratchet mechanism emits; a correct adjustment is that, a 4-7 clicks should be heard before the parking brake is fully applied. Otherwise, access to the parking brake lever can be achieved by removing the rear part of the center console, depending on the model some of them may have the parking brake adjusting nuts accessible just by taking the ashtray out of the back of the center console. Stop the front wheels and then elevate the rear of the car and place it firmly on jackstands. It is recommended that on rear drum brake models, with the parking brake lever on the fourth position of the ratchet mechanism the locknuts should be loosened and the adjusting nuts should be turned to the same side until it becomes hard to move the rear wheels/drums. Once this has been done, push the lever of the parking brake all the way up and ensure that the wheels/hubs move freely. Test the adjustment, press the parking brake all the way down, and count the clicks the parking brake ratchet emits, and, when adjusting, re-adjust. When the adjustment is made correctly, attach the adjusting nuts and tighten the locknuts then place the center console part/ashtray where applicable. In brake models with rear disc brakes that have the parking brake released, loosen the parking brake locknuts equally and adjusting nuts until the rear caliper parking brake lever is reseated in its stop. At this stage, loosen equally the adjusting nuts until both parking brake lever just clear the caliper stops, making sure that the distance between each caliper parking brake lever and its stop is not more than 1.5 mm (1/16-inch) and that the gap on both the right and left is equal. Ensure that both wheels/discs are turning freely, and then ensure the adjustment by pressing the parking brake to the maximum number of clicks the parking brake ratchet gives; re-adjustment is necessary. When the adjustment is made correctly, attach the adjusting nuts and tighten the locknuts then place the center console part/ashtray where applicable.
