Volkswagen Cabrio Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall a shock absorber on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
The process of removing the strut involves loosening the wheel bolts, chocking the wheels in the rear, putting on the parking brake, jacking the front of the vehicle and putting on axle stands then removing the rear wheel of the vehicle. Indicate the location of all suspension strut-to-Steering Knuckle bolts and then loosen and remove all nuts and bolts, and unclip the brake hose of the strut. Unscrew the plastic cover on the strut upper mounting, loosen the upper mounting nut, remove the upper mounting nut and retrieve the mounting plate, and be sure to keep the strut piston with an Allen key, should you need it. Unscrew the strut at the steering knuckle and work it out under the wheel arch, and re-install the mounting bushing as necessary. Having stripped the strut, clean, and clamp it in a vise erectly. Install spring compressor so that the tension of the coil spring can be relieved and this will be followed by disassembly. When dealing with models that have Plus suspension, unscrew the spring seat retaining nut and keep the strut piston but unscrew the bearing and upper spring seat, coil spring, damper piston boot, and rubber damper stop. Check all parts to be worn or damaged, ensure that the bearing is working smoothly and replace any required parts. Check the strut against fluid leakage and pitting, checking the action of the strut to draw smoothly. Coil spring- in case of distortion or cracks, change. In models that have base suspension, a special slotted socket is used to take out the upper spring seat retaining nut and then remove the strut mounting, upper spring seat and washer. Take off the coil spring and examine the strut elements. Installation Lie the rubber damper and piston boot on the strut piston rod, the coil spring, upper spring seat, and bearing, and screw the retaining nut. To install, position the mounting bushing in place, position the strut and insert it into the steering knuckle, connect it with the steering knuckle and insert strut-steering knuckle bolts with new retaining nuts. Fix the mounting plate, the upper mounting nut and screw them to the required torque and connect the brake hose once more to the strut. Last but not least, fit the wheel, and tighten the wheel bolts, and the camber angle is supposed to be checked and adjusted as needed.
