Volkswagen Rabbit Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Oil Pump, Timing Chain and Timing Chain Tensioner on Volkswagen Rabbit?
    A:
Oil pump cannot be serviced and has to be changed in case of any issue. First, you want to take the engine off and detach the transmission to the engine. The next step is to remove the upper oil pan and oil pick-up tube and the Crankshaft front oil seal flange. Slacken the sprockets on the camshaft and take out the control housing. Cut off the tensioner piston of the oil pump using a screwdriver and inserting a pin. Take out the tensioner mounting fastener and move the tensioner assembly, chain guide, and tensioner guide off the dowels on the cylinder block making sure that the pin does not come out. When you are holding the oil pump drive sprocket, take out the sprocket retaining bolt and then take out the sprocket and chain. Then remove the oil pump that is holding fasteners, the oil pump and O-ring and put in a new O-ring. The crankshaft should be locked in the TDC position and a new O-ring on the pump fitted, then the pump should be fitted, and the retaining fasteners hand tightened. Install the oil pump sprocket by inserting the lettering outward and affix the sprocket retaining bolt and tighten the sprocket to the recommended torque. Slide the oil pump bolts to loosen, and use the VW special alignment tool to reach a point where the ole oil pump sprocket is centered in line with the crankshaft sprocket, but with the special shim in place in 2011 models. Install the tool on the crankshaft and insert the tool mounting bolts. Move the oil pump sprocket towards the tool and rub it against the magnets until they are clean. Take off the crankshaft lock pin and tap the crankshaft in the direction of the front using a shim or a screwdriver. Lightly press the body of the oil pump against the side of the oil pump chain, and tighten the retaining bolts to the required torque. Once more lock the crankshaft in the TDC position and remove the special alignment tool. When a new pump is fitted, pour oil in the pick-up tube hole as the sprocket of the oil pump is rotating. Insert the oil pump chain on the sprockets and also make sure that it flows straight between two sprockets. Install the upper oil pan, and install the chain guide, tensioner guide and tensioner assembly to the cylinder block dowels; tighten the tensioner fastener to the recommended torque. Take out the pin in the tensioner and unlock the piston in order to hook up the chain guide. The rest of the installation is done in the opposite sequence of deletion.
  • Q: How to remove the oil pump on Volkswagen Rabbit?
    A:
In order to complete the procedure of removing the Timing Belt of a BPY engine, it is always important to ensure that the engine has been started in the TDC on the first cylinder then lose the Oil Pan. A small screwdriver should be used to press the tabs and remove the chain/sprocket cover horizontally. Unscrew the retaining bolt of the oil pump drive sprocker approximately one full turn and loosen the tensioner blade of the drive chain and ensure that it is in place by inserting a drill bit. Take the sprocket off the shaft of the oil pump and detach the sprockets off the chain. Slowly loosen and take out bolts holding the balance shaft housing and intermediate plate with the various lengths of the bolts. Take out balancer shaft housing and plate, retaining bolts and the intermediate plate and replacing. Unscrew the drive chain tensioner so as to remove it out of the balance shaft housing. Should there be a need, take away the oil pump cover and drag out the inner and outer rotors. In the case of CCTA and CBFA, it requires two individuals to take away the oil pump; begin by taking out the lower oil pan and the oil baffle. Using aid, loosen the mounting bolts of the oil pump and at the same time, pull on the chain tensioner of the oil pump, before removing the oil pump. Take out the oil pick-up tube holding fastener and the tube and make sure to change the O-ring. Inspection, in case of a potential problem in the oil pump on CCTA and CBFA engines, it needs to be replaced as a whole. In the BPY engines, take off the timing belt and un-bolt the crankshaft oil seal housing, and check the drive chain wear. The balancer shafts and housing are not to be disassembled and only replaced as a whole when defective. In case, the oil pump has been dismantled, clean and examine the parts of it checking whether they are worn or not, changing the parts in case of necessity. In case of reusability, place the rotors in the pump body including the alignment marks properly in place and put on a pump cover and tighten bolts. To fit onto the BPY engines, the chain tensioner assembly should be attached to the balancer shaft housing and the bolts tightened. Apply sealant to the intermediate plate and place it on top of the dowels and feed through the drive chain provided it is required. Place balancer shaft housing in position, place new bolts and tighten them in phases. Install the oil pump sprocket in that correct position with a drill bit, tie up the drive chain, and set the balancer shaft sprocket to TDC position. Take away the screwing tools and put the cover on top of the drive sprockets. In the case with CCTA and CBFA engines, a new O-ring in the oil pick-up tube, new oil pump, and a fastener are installed. Installation of oil pump to the chain with the help of retaining fasteners should also be done. Lastly, fit a new oil baffle, tighten the fasteners and fit the oil pan back in place. Add oil, turn on the engine and monitor the presence of oil pressure and leaks, and repeat the engine oil level.
