  • Q: What precautions should be taken regarding the Transmission Filter when disconnecting the battery and servicing the transmission fluid on Volkswagen Rabbit?
    A:
    This may involve a lot of care because after unplugging the battery, a number of systems have to be re-trained in order to work properly. A scan tool is used to measure the temperature of the transaxle fluid when it is serviced by a dealer or in a qualified repair shop, however, at home, the temperature of the fluid in the transaxle is to be estimated. Before commencing the engine, at least 5.5 quarts of DSG fluid should be poured in and the engine should be on to check or fill fluid. The transmission fluid is to be drained and replaced at certain intervals, but it is important to note that the operation must be done after all the heat is gone. The purchase of the respective transmission fluid should be done in advance, and the required equipment comprises jackstands, a drain pan, newspapers, and clean rags. The vehicle must be lifted and firmly held in jackstands making sure it is flat to examine or fill the transaxle. The splash shield beneath the engine and the engine cover and battery tray should be taken out. The transmission should also be covered with a drain pan and rags and the filter housing should also be loosened but not taken out to enable the oil to trickle back to the transaxle. It is then possible to remove the filter housing, and the filter element, as well as the O-ring. Before the installation, the filter housing should be rinsed with clean water, a new O-ring is to be put on, and the new filter element should be covered with DSG oil. The filter enclosure must also be tightened to the required torque. In the event it is equipped, the transaxle shield should be pulled out, and the drain plug removed, to drain the transaxle. Once drained, the overflow tube is to be replaced and tightened and the quantity of the fluid drained recorded later. The fluid is filled at the check/fill plug hole using suction gun or special equipment until all the fluid is emptied, at least 5.5 quarts of DSG oil is required before starting the engine. Using the transmission in Park and the parking brake in place, the engine is to be started and the gear selector should be switched to each of the ranges and then you pause slightly and move it to Park. The check/drain plug must be taken out to measure fluid levels and add more fluid when needed until it drips. The check/drain plug must also be replaced with a new seal and then replaced and tightened. Splash shield that is fitted under the vehicle must be re-fitted, the vehicle must be lowered and the installation must be done in reverse sequence. Lastly, short driving should be made to verify leakage at the check /drain plug and filter housing.
