- Q: How to replace the Crankshaft Position Sensor on Volkswagen Jetta?A:The CKP sensor or the Engine Speed Sensor is located on the front left (drivers) end of the engine block, near the transmission bellhousing (1.4L, 1.8L, and 2.0L engines). In the case of 1.4L, you need to lift the vehicle and place it on jackstands after which you will have to remove the engine undercover. Where necessary, remove the bolt that holds the charge air cooler pump bracket then relocate the pump. Unscrew the electrical connector of the CKP sensor, peel off the rubber seal of the engine block and unscrew the bolt and pull out the sensor. Check the O-ring whether it is damaged or not and change it in case of need, otherwise, remove and place again in the same way in reverse order. In the case of 1.8L and 2.0L engines, take the same steps, such as the removal of the engine under cover and, in turbocharged engines, unconnecting the charge air pipe in order to access it. Unscrew the electrical connector to the CKP sensor, loosen the mounting screw, and pull out the sensor including the O-ring and examine it. In the case of 2.5L engines, the right-front wheel bolts should be loosened, the vehicle raised and the right-front wheel taken off. The under-vehicle splash shield must be removed, the CKP sensor should be found in an area close to the flywheel, and the electrical connector should be disconnected and the mounting fasteners should be removed to remove the sensor making sure to replace in their correct sequence.
- Q: Where is the crankshaft position sensor located and how does it function on Volkswagen Passat?A:The crankshaft position sensor is installed on the lower left of the engine close to the engine oil drain plug, and it measures the openings in the sensor ring indicating the top dead center (TDC) of each engine cylinder, generating a 120 degree signal. It functions through permanent magnet, core and a coil, where the varying gap influences the magnetic field and thus it determines the voltage signal sent to the engine control module (ECM). These signals are needed in ignition timing and fuel synchronization. The sensor is replaced in the same way as the electrical connector, only that the retaining bolt is removed and the sensor is extracted. The replacement follows the same procedure but in reverse order of the removal followed by installation of the O-ring which has been replaced and lightly lubricated with clean engine oil.
