  • Q: What steps should be taken to inspect and measure the Camshaft, Camshaft Bearing and Valve Lifter for wear and damage on Volkswagen Passat?
    A:
    Inspect visually the camshaft bearing surfaces to determine whether they are pitted, marked with scores, galled, and worn abnormally, and in any case damaged the Cylinder Head needs replacement. Measure the outside diameter of each of the camshaft bearings journals and record the measurements, and compare them against the outside diameter of the journal and measure the inside diameter of each of the respective camshaft bearings. Calculate the difference between each cam journal outside diameter and the corresponding cam bearing bore inside diameter to give the clearance of the oil per bearing, and compare with the allowable journal-bearing clearance specified, any figures falling within the normal limits of wear requiring replacement of the camshaft, or the cylinder head, or both. Check camshaft runout by inserting the camshaft again into the cylinder head and attaching a dial indicator to the center journal, positioning it zero and rotating the camshaft at a slow rate to record the readings; in case of the runout measured to be higher than the limit, change the camshaft. Measurement of check camshaft endplay with a dial indicator with the snout of the camshaft lined up with the dial indicator and adjusted in a zero position after pushing the camshaft to the rear and then prying to the front to check the reading; in case the endplay is over-specified, examine the bearing caps and in case they are worn replace the cylinder head. Measure the height of the lobes of all the cam followers with a micrometer and record the measurements and relative positions of both intake and exhaust lobes; the measurements applied here being intake lobes to intake lobes and exhaust lobes to exhaust lobes. Check the contact and sliding surfaces of each lifter in regard to wear and scratches and ensure that every lifter travels freely in its bore to avoid valve sticking and possible engine damage. Repairs and re-assembly Before reassembling, ensure all components (new and old) are inspected after cleaning. In case of noisy valve lifters, start up the engine until it reaches regular operating temperature, take the valve cover off, and rotate the engine until the No.1 Piston reaches TDC. Clearance between the camshaft lobe and the lifter Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance; over 0.008 inch may indicate that the lifter or camshaft lobe is worn. In absence of a clearance, spurt the lifter to drain it out and inspect, repeat with others according to the firing order. Where clearance exceeds the maximum permitted test the camshaft; the camshaft being satisfactory, the lifters are defective, and need replacement.
