How to remove and install a tie rod end on Volkswagen Passat?

When removing the wheel, it is required to loosen the wheel bolts, lift the front part of the vehicle and hold it firmly on jackstands with the parking brake on and the rear wheels blocked to prevent rolling away. Then loosen the end of the tie-rod jam nut, by keeping the tie-rod in position, with a wrench; do not loosen the nut all the way out, as it will then act as a guide to the threading of the tie-rod end. Assuming a replacement of the tie-rod end, the number of threads that are exposed between the nut and tie-rod end should be counted. Next, loosen the tie-rod to steering knuckle bolt and pinch bolt/nut and press the tie-rod end out of the steering knuckle and then unscrew the tie-rod end out of the tie-rod. To install, when the jam nut had been removed, thread it onto the tie-rod end until the required number of threads was counted then thread the tie-rod end into the tie-rod until it reached the jam nut and attached it to the steering knuckle. Install and clamp the tie-rod end-to-steering knuckle bolt to the required torque, next to the pinch bolt, and a new nut, also to the required torque. Lastly, screw the jam nut securely, fit the wheel, lower the vehicle and once more screw the wheel bolts to a required torque making sure that the front end alignment is checked and rectified in case of need.
