The detachment of the battery can cause the problems in the driveability, which will be solved only with the help of a scan tool, and it can also cause the appearance of warning lights on the instrument panel, which will also have to be turned off with the help of a scan tool. The majority of the public scan tools cannot do all these functions and this implies that a dealer service department or an appropriately equipped service repair centre will have to be visited after any service performance. Moreover, the models with an anti-theft radio have to be properly activated with a code prior to disconnecting the battery. The ignition switch is a cast metal housing, an ignition lock cylinder, and an electrical part, which is placed under the steering column. Check the switch, reach inside it and de-connect the electrical connector, then back probe with an ohmmeter, making sure that continuity exists between the corresponding terminals in various positions on the switch. In case continuity is wrong, then the switch ought to be changed. To change it, first of all, disconnect the negative battery cable and open the steering column covers and ignition switch shroud. On automatic transmission models, it is important to make sure that the shift linkage is in the Park position before moving on. Disconnect the park/lock cable and disconnect the ignition switch by disconnecting the large electrical connector and unscrewing the mounting screws, which may contain a locking coating which has to be chipped off. In order to complete this task, push the key into the key lock cylinder, then turn it to the Start position and then use a piece of paper clip to force the key out. To remove the ignition assembly, chisel the steering column bracket shear bolts. Installation of the key lock cylinder should be done with the On position facing the correct direction and pushed in until it clips. All the remaining part of the installation is in the opposite order of removal.
