Volkswagen Passat Oil Pan

The main oil reservoir of the engine is the Volkswagen Passat Oil Pan, which contains the lubricant that prevents the rubbing together of all moving parts and the creation of metal dust. This Oil Pan is mounted directly below the block in the chassis, and the force of gravity causes spent oil to be drawn down after passing through bearings and journals, and fresh oil is drawn up again by the pump to ensure that the process repeats itself over and over. Almost all modern transversely designed Volkswagen Passat applications employ the well-known wet sump design, in which the pan serves as both storage tank and structural shield to the crankcase. This simple design is easy to manufacture, but the engine needs to be mounted a little higher to allow the sump to clear road debris, and internal baffles to quash the slop of oil during hard cornering that may temporarily cut off pickup tube supply. It has only been tried over the years with high-performance variants of the Volkswagen Passat by using a dry sump design, whereby a separate external tank and twin pumps are applied to ensure that the necessary constant lubrication is maintained under extreme g-forces. To average commuters, however, the conventional wet sump of a Volkswagen Passat is perfect, with its low price, ease of changing the oil, and reliability in maintaining a certain temperature. The stamped or cast aluminum shell of the Oil Pan is still sealed against the block with a gasket and drain plug, thus preventing leaks, and quick fluid service is a requirement that is the key to keeping every Volkswagen engine running smoothly and reliably.

Choose OEM Oil Pan for superior quality and long-lasting durability. They match the Volkswagen's factory specifications exactly and pass strict quality control. If you plan to replace Oil Pan on your Passat, put OEM at the top of your list. You'll get the right fit, reliable performance, and peace of mind. We stock an extensive inventory of genuine Volkswagen Passat parts. It is easy to find what you need. You will love our competitive prices that help you save. No more hassle with returns or guesswork. Every part includes a warranty straight from the manufacturer. Get trusted quality, strong durability, and real value today.

Volkswagen Passat Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the oil pan for Four-cylinder engines on Volkswagen Passat?
    A:
The engine is removed by first ensuring that the parking brake is set and the rear wheels blocked and lifting the front of the vehicle ensuring it is well supported on jackstands. Take the splash shield out at the back of the engine, and put the radiator support panel into the service position, and make sure you can access the front of the engine by removing the front bumper. Drain engine oil and pull out the oil dipstick then the serpentine drivebelts and engine cooling fan. In air-conditioned models, unbolt the air conditioning compressor drivebelt tensioner roller, remove the braces on the torque rod support bracket side, and unbolt the torque rod support bracket depending on the presence of air conditioning. Unplug the starter motor cables and un plug the electrical connector on the oil temperature sending unit (where fitted). The right-hand transmission mount has bolts, which should be loosened and removed; the same should be done to the left-hand transmission mount on the automatic automobile. In the case of manual transmission, unscrew the left-hand mount nut until it is in contact with the bolt end. Attach a hoist to the engine and lift it with a lot of caution, and then undo the left side engine mount and the engine bracket. Unscrew the flange bolts and separate the turbocharger oil return line, which can then be laid aside and the gasket removed. Unscrew and pull out the bolts of the oil pan, and reach the rear ones with a cut-out in the Flywheel, if it becomes necessary, then get the oil pan off and the gasket as well, tapping it carefully, should it be stuck. To install, scrape the old sealant off the block and the oil pan, clean the mating surfaces and inspect the flange of the oil pan. Check the oil pump pick-up tube assembly and install in case removed with a new O-ring or gasket. In case of the use of RTV sealant, apply a bead to the flange of the oil pan; in case of a solid gasket used, apply sealant at the corners in which the oil seal housings join the engine block then firmly press the gasket on the oil pan and line up the bolt holes. Install the oil pan loosely on the engine block, and install the bolts that connect oil pan to the engine block screwed in the middle outward and lastly screwed the oil pan-to-bell housing bolts in case the oil pan had bolts. Install it in the same sequence as it was removed and make sure not to apply the sealant before the sealant has dried before adding the oil and then check the engine to see the oil pressure and leakages.
  • Q: How to remove and install a oil pan for V6 engines on Volkswagen Passat?
    A:
The V6 engines have a two-piece oil pan and the upper half of the engine must be removed to access the oil pan. The steps required to remove the lower oil pan are, first, place the parking brake and block the rear wheels, the next step is to raise the front of the vehicle, and place it on jackstands. Take off splash shield under the engine assuming it is present and empty the engine oil together with the oil dipstick. Then loosen the stabilizer bar by loosening the bushing bolts and dropping it to the ground. Undo the lower oil pan mounting bolts, and then undo the oil pan and gasket, tapping with a mallet if very difficult. In the case of SOHC engines, the pick-up cover of the oil pump should be removed and then the gasket is removed. To install, remove all the old sealant or gasket material on the oil pans and cleanse the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. The threaded holes in the upper oil pan are to remain clean and the flange of the oil pan is to be examined against distortion, repairing any nicks or burrs. Check the oil pick-up screen is free and on SOHC and early DOHC engines, fit the lower oil pan gasket to upper oil pan then the pick-up cover. In subsequent DOHC engines where the oil pump is driven by a chain, put a layer of RTV sealant on the oil pan flange, and make sure that it is installed in less than 5 minutes. Install the oil pan on the top oil pan and place the bolts in place loosely then install them by tightening to the required torque. Install the rest and reverse the procedures of removal, following the instructions of the sealant manufacturers in the time of the curing process and lastly, running the engine, to watch the level of oil pressure and any leaks.
