If the battery is disconnected, several systems must be re-learned before they will work properly. The Power/rain Control Module (PCM), housed within a waterproof box in the cowl area, cannot be replaced at home because the new unit must be reprogrammed with a proprietary scan tool. In many models, the PCM is also housed inside a special metal anti-theft box, making it extremely difficult to remove. This procedure is intended for accessing the clutch master cylinder by removing the PCM and electronics box. First, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Next, remove the cowl cover and the cover from the electronics box. Pry off the retaining strap from the PCM and move it aside. Some models may have an anti-theft housing or cover plate secured with shear-head bolts; cut slots in these bolts with a small cutting wheel or grinder, or drill through them and use a screw extractor to remove them. Unplug the electrical connectors near the firewall, pull back the release tabs to detach the relay carrier from the electronics box, dislodge the grommet, and pull the wiring harness through the opening in the electronics box. Unscrew the fasteners and remove the electronics box from the cowl area. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
