Volkswagen Rabbit Knock Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when disconnecting the battery and removing knock sensors on Volkswagen Rabbit?
    A:
Disconnection of the battery requires re-learning of a number of systems before the systems become functional. The first step involves getting rid of the engine cover and the cable is taken off the negative terminal of the battery. On four-cylinder models, lift the front end of the vehicle and place it on jackstands and then unscrew the splash shield under the vehicle and drain the cooling system. When discussing the timing belt (BPY) engine, it is important to note that the engine has two knock sensors, sensor 1 sensor 2, one is positioned close to the thermostat housing and the other is positioned close to the oil filter housing bracket. To access the area behind the oil filter housing, remove the intake manifold, disconnect the coolant hoses and tube, and to take off the knock sensor 1, remove the thermostat housing. In the case of knock sensor 2, take off the oil cooler mounting fasteners and oil cooler, disconnect the electrical connector of the oil pressure switch, and remove the bracket of the engine oil filter housing. Disassemble the electrical connector of the knock sensor, unscrew the fixing fastener, and take away the sensor(s). In timing chain (CCTA, CBFA) motors, one knock sensor is placed just above the water pump; loosen the water pump and detach the electrical connector, un-screw the fastener holding the sensor in place and remove the sensor. The opposite of removing is installation and it should be ensured that the knock sensor fastener is tightened to specific torque, a new thermostat housing gasket should be installed, a new water pump gasket should be installed, the oil cooler and the oil filter housing bracket gaskets should be installed, the cooling system should be refilled incase of draining, and the engine should be started to check whether there are any leaks or not. In five-cylinder models, the two knock sensors will be found under the exhaust manifold, and the electrical lead of each sensor will have to be traced back to the electrical connector and disconnect, the heat shield fittings and the heat shield removed, and the mounting fittings and the sensor removed. When the knock sensor is being fitted, it is important to ensure that the mounting fastener is clamped to the given torque and installation is otherwise the opposite of removal.
