On five-cylinder models, whenever the fuel system has been opened it must be bled to prevent damage to the catalytic converter. Additionally, whenever the battery is disconnected, several systems must be re-learned before they will work properly. The following procedure is much easier to perform if the fuel tank is empty. Begin by removing the fuel tank filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure, then relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the rear bench seat, disconnect the
Fuel Pump control module for four-cylinder models, and then disconnect the electrical connector and fuel supply line quick-connect fittings from the fuel pump module. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the right rear wheel and the rear inner fender splash shield. For four-cylinder BPY models, unclip the electrical wire from the filler connection, then remove the fuel filler flap mounting retainer and fuel flap assembly. For four-cylinder CCTA, CBFA, and all five-cylinder models, open the fuel tank filler flap and remove the mounting fastener and plastic liner. Remove the fuel filler tube mounting fasteners and disconnect the hoses. For four-cylinder CCTA, CBFA, and all five-cylinder models, unclip the ABS sensor wire from the bracket, then remove the rivet and protective shield. Disconnect the exhaust system hangers, then remove the center and rear mufflers from the vehicle. Remove the fuel filter and cap the fuel lines. Support the fuel tank securely, then remove the fuel tank mounting fasteners and the retaining strap mounting fastener, remove the strap, and carefully lower the fuel tank. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to tighten the fuel tank mounting fasteners to the specified torque. On five-cylinder models, bleed the fuel system. Finally, reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal, start the engine, and check for fuel leaks.
