Volkswagen Rabbit Throttle Body Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when disconnecting the battery and replacing the throttle body control module on Volkswagen Rabbit?
    A:
When the battery is being disconnected, a number of systems need to be re-learned, until they start working again. In case the throttle body control module is replaced with a new throttle body control, the Engine Control Module (ECM) will have to be programmed with the factory scan tool. Start by loosening the cable attached at the negative battery terminal and get rid of the covers of the engine. To remove the charge air pipe, first raise the vehicle on jackstands and firmly clamp the engine on all four cylinders, disconnect the electrical connector at the charge air pipe, loosen the clamps at both ends of the charge air pipe and remove the pipe at the throttle body in case of a four-cylinder engine. The second step entails unscrewing the electrical connector on the throttle body, and then de-mounting the throttle body fasteners, then very cautiously removing the throttle body out of the intake manifold. Check throttle body gasket; when it is flattened, hardened, or cracked, change it, otherwise may be re-used. You are to cover the intake manifold opening with any clean shop towel to keep out any form of anything. The opposite of removal is installation whereby one should ensure that throttle body fasteners have been tightened to the stipulated torque. On five cylinder engines, loosen vent hose, secondary air injection pump hose and clamp air inlet pipe between throttle body and air filter housing, loosen air inlet pipe. To some models, removal of the air guide connector-to-radiator support fasteners and connector can be required. Unscrew the electrical connector and the vent hose, loosely remove the throttle body mounting fasteners and then thoroughly remove the throttle body out of the intake manifold. In case a throttle body is heated using coolant, close the lines to the throttle body with a clamp, remove the clamps, and the lines to the throttle body, always replacing the clamps. Check throttle body gasket; when it is flattened, hardened, or cracked, change it, otherwise may be re-used. Place a clean shop towel over the intake manifold opening to ensure nothing falls in, and then place the gasket into the intake manifold and ensure that it is correctly fitted by making sure that the tab of throttle body seal fits in the intake manifold notch. Lastly, installation is the opposite of removing that is tightening the throttle body fasteners to the required torque.
