Make sure that you never leave the cable on the negative battery terminal unless first and to the tool you are using to loosen the cable clamps until it is last or the battery will be shorted. In case the audio system has the anti-theft system, then make sure that you have the right activation code before detaching the battery. The vehicle may have some systems that need to have battery power at all times either to keep operating (alarm system, power door locks, etc.) or to retain control unit memory (radio station presets, Powertrain Control Module and other control units). In case of battery change, the power keeping these systems is switched off and it is necessary to learn the systems again before the systems will operate correctly. Consequently, prior to disconnection of the battery, it is prudent to ensure that on a powered door lock vehicle, one should take out a key in the ignition key and hold on to it, lest it gets locked inside the vehicle when the power door locks come into play accidentally when the battery is reconnected. Some of these issues can be prevented with the help of devices referred to as memory-savers, which can be generally plugged into the cigarette lighter and connected to a spare battery, which is generally enough to provide current to keep audio unit security codes, PCM memory, and even power to always hot circuits like the clock and radio memory circuit. To un-hook the battery to facilitate service operations where power should be disconnected to the vehicle, one has to shut the ignition and take off the key, then remove the battery cover or negative battery terminal cover, loosen the cable end bolt and detach the cable end of the negative battery terminal and isolate the cable end to avoid any accidental contact with the battery terminal. To restart the battery, reconnect the negative battery terminal, insert the key in the ignition switch and switch it to the On position, and then the Off position, and connect a scan tool to detect any trouble codes, turn on the ignition and reset the clock, fully open and close all the windows and the sunroof to reset the auto stop features, and then, when all the windows are closed completely, continue to hold the switch in the closed position till a relay click is heard. Turn on the car; the steering electro-mechanical steering alert (ASR/ESP) light must now be activated. Steer the car straight ahead at a maximum speed of 10 to 13 mph over a short distance in order to re-calibrate the steering angle sensor and switch off the warning light.
