Volkswagen Oil Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Why is it important to consider the oil filter during frequent oil changes for preventive maintenance on Volkswagen Jetta?
    A:
Preventive maintenance is also necessary by regularly changing the oil which may be old and may be diluted and contaminated thus causing premature wear to the engine. You will need all the tools needed and lots of rags or newspapers to use in case of spills beforehand. Expect possible problems because the engine and exhaust parts will be hot in the process. Park the car on a flat surface and turn on the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature and then switch off. Take off valve cover filler cap, tie rags around the filter housing to absorb spills, jack the vehicle up on jackstands, and loosen under the vehicle splash cover fasteners. Place a drain pan under the drain plug and take out the plug and ensure it drains gradually checking it to see whether it has metal shavings. Wipe the drain plug and the surrounding area around the drain plug before replacing the drain plug with another one and tightening it. Find and clean the oil filter housing, remove the dust cap of the valve and press the valve in order to empty the filter housing of oil. Unscrew the oil filter housing, wipe it and use a new O-ring and lubricate it using clean engine oil and fit the new filter element. Install the filter housing with screws on the engine and tighten the dust valve cap on the engine should it have one. On certain types of engines, it is necessary to loosen the oil filter with a wrench, remove the old one wiping the mount surface, matching the old with the new one, lubricating the gasket on the new IAT filter and fitting it as the instruction of the manufacturing company. Once all tools and rags have been removed, make a fresh addition of oil by use of the oil filler cap, ensure the level is maintained and then start the engine so that the oil is circulated. Keep the engine running few minutes and monitor the oil level once again and pour more oil as required. Look after leakages and correct oil level in the initial few journeys following the change. Disposal of the old oil should be done in a responsible manner where the oil is recycled. Once the oil has been changed reset the service indicator with either the windshield wiper switch of the instrument cluster buttons in order to keep a proper record of the engine operating time and the vehicle mileage.
  • Q: Why is the oil filter essential for frequent oil changes in preventive maintenance on Volkswagen Passat?
    A:
Regular change of oil is of great significance in terms of preventive maintenance because old engine oil is diluted and contaminated, which results in the premature wear of an engine. Although some have recommended that one should replace the oil filter after every other oil change, the low cost and the ease involved in replacing oil filters justifies the replacement of the oil filters with each oil change. Preparation Before beginning, make sure you have all the tools and materials you needed and clean rags and newspapers to clean up spills. The underside of the vehicle is more easily accessed when the vehicle is hoisted, ramped onto or jackstands. Heat the engine up to a normal working temperature and utilise this time to collect any other available tools or oil required. Use warm oil, and raise and support the car carefully, and then put off the splash shield underneath the engine. When the oil will flow out forcibly at the beginning place the drain pan underneath the drain plug. Very slowly twist off the drain plug using a wrench with or without gloves and leave the oil to empty fully into the pan stirring it up as needed. Once emptied, remove the drain plug and the surrounding area and then put it into place again and screw it tightly. Then place the drain pan beneath the oil filter and loosen up and remove the old filter with an oil filter wrench pouring contents into the drain pan. Check the old filter against the new one to see that they fit together and then clean the mounting area and look at the possibility of any remaining rubber gasket. Wipe a light layer of clean oil on the gasket of the new filter, then install it on the engine using the recommendation of the manufacturer on tightening it. Once all the tools and rags are removed beneath the car, refit the splash shield and lower the car. The oil filler cap should be found in the engine compartment and fill in the fresh oil either with or without a funnel. Add the right quantity of oil, allow it to settle a few minutes and check the level of the dipstick. When the level exceeds the area that has already been hatched, then start engine about a minute, then look out at the oil drain plug of the oil pan and the area surrounding the oil filter. Once the new oil has circulated, again check the dipstick and put in more oil as necessary. In the initial couple of trips following the change of oil, check on leakage and make sure that the oil level is put in the right place. Get rid of the old oil in an appropriate way because it cannot be used again, consult with local facilities to make some recycling and carry it in an appropriate container without putting it on the ground or along the drainage.
