Volkswagen Cylinder Head

Volkswagen Cylinder Head sits atop every VW combustion chamber and seals the fiery mix so the engine creates smooth power, guiding air and fuel in, sending exhaust out, and carrying coolant to keep temperatures stable. Born in 1937 with the dream of a people car, the brand has become a global symbol of smart mobility, famed for the Beetle's charm, the Type 2's versatility, and the Golf's crisp handling. Modern VW vehicles ride on the modular MQB platform, which trims weight and cost while TSI turbo engines give lively acceleration and solid fuel economy. Digital cockpits, park assist, and user-friendly MIB touchscreens put clear information and easy control at a driver's fingertips, and the growing ID electric lineup shows the brand's commitment to a cleaner future for its experience. The Cylinder Head now uses lightweight aluminum in major engines, shedding heat quickly, reducing mass, and allowing higher compression for sharper throttle response. Coolant passages surround the valves and spark plugs to prevent hotspots, and single-use torque-to-yield bolts spread clamping force evenly to guard the gasket against leaks. Smooth ports inside the Cylinder Head cut airflow resistance so every VW engine can breathe freely, deliver strong torque, and maintain durability across the entire model range.

Volkswagen Cylinder Head Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the Cylinder Head on Volkswagen Transporter?
    A:
The first step would be to remove the engine in the vehicle. Then disassemble the exhaust system, heat exchangers and upper cylinder cover plates, inlet manifold and carburettor. Unscrew the spring clamp gluing the rocker cover to the head and remove the cover. Loosen the two nuts that hold the pedestals of the rocker shafts in place and remove the pedestals and shaft and rockers in one piece. Take out all four pushrods and then insert them through a piece of cardboard to trace their positions and orientation. Note before loosening the eight nuts that fix the cylinder head in position that by loosening the head, the four pushrod tubes together with the cylinder barrels will be released. When the pistons are not being removed, the cylinder barrels will not be moved, but the engine should not be turned, and in turning the engine fasten the barrels down to the crankcase until it is temporarily secured. In case the barrels are interfered with then they need to be taken out to install new base gaskets on the cylinders. Slack the cylinder head stud nuts a quarter to half-turn each in the opposite order in which they were tightened the last time in a given sequence until all the nuts are loose. As soon as all the nuts are taken away the head can be pulled back. Lastly, take out the pushrod tubes between the head and the crankcase, with the cylinders disconnected to the head having to be removed lastly before the full removal of the head.
  • Q: What precautions should be taken when performing this procedure to avoid triggering a trouble code and ensure proper reassembly of the cylinder head on Volkswagen Passat?
    A:
This is only done with caution because doing this exercise can also cause a trouble code and one will have to visit a dealer service department or a repair shop with the correct scan tool to adjust the cam sensor and reset the code. The head of the cylinder may be taken out with the exhaust attached. Start by unplugging the cable, at the negative battery terminal, and make sure you have the anti-theft radio activation code because, when you unplug the battery, you can have a problem with the driveability and the warning lights will mean that you will have to use a scan tool to turn them off. Drain engine coolant and position engine to TDC and turn crankshaft another 90 degrees to prevent piston impact. Take out intake manifold, timing belt and also disconnect the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold. Disconnect all the electrics connector and heater hose of the back elbow of the cylinder head and label them to fit back. Tighten the cylinder head bolts gradually and one disassembles them and places the new ones in its place. Pull the cylinder head off the block with possible help, and pull off the gasket to identify. In case disassembly is required, detach the exhaust manifold and continue the overhaul operations, make sure the manifold is put back before you reinstall the cylinder head on the car. Wipe the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and block completely, examining them carefully and seeing that no carbon gets into the passages of oil and water. In case of the suspected warpage, examine the surface of the cylinder head gasket with the view of distortion. Wipe the bolt holes and make sure the crankshaft is not in TDC position when installing the cylinder head again to avoid damage to the pistons. Installation with modified old bolts as alignment dowels until the new head gasket is placed in its proper position. With the help, the cylinder head should be mounted on the block, and the gasket must fit and sit well. Installment of new cylinder head bolts: hand tight, delete the alignment dowels and tighten the bolts in a designated order with regards to the required torque and angle. Install the timing belt, reinstall crankshaft sprocker and tensioner, reposition timing belt and reverse the installation procedure in the same order it was removed. Lastly, replace engine oil and coolant, start the engine and inspect the engine leaks.
