When changing the battery, there are multiple systems that will not be able to work properly unless they are re-learned. The steering lock housing is situated behind the steering column electronic control module that comprises of cast-metal housing, ignition lock cylinder, ignition switch and electronic immobilizer induction coil. Start by unplugging the cable of the negative end of the battery. The second step is to take off the steering column covers, steering wheel, clockspring and steering column switch assembly. On car models that have automatic transaxles, make sure that the shift linkage is in Park when removing or installing the lock cylinder. Insert the key into the lock and switch the key to the ON position and then loose the electrical connector on the electronic immobilizer induction coil. To eject the key lock cylinder, still leave the key in the ON position and position the access hole with the mark on the trim. Use a straightened paper clip to insert into the hole in the cylinder and remove the key, lock cylinder and the induction coil of the electronic immobilizer in a single unit, observing that the induction coil of the electronic immobilizer is inbuilt into the lock cylinder and cannot be removed on its own. In the installation of the key lock cylinder, one should position it in its original position and press it until it clips in position and remove the paper clip, turn the key to the Lock position and pull the key out. Removal is the opposite of installation. When using the ignition switch that does not have the keyless entry system, loosen the mounting bolts of the steering column and lower the steering column, dismount the electrical connector of the ignition switch, unlock the ignition switch by pressing the tabs in the lock housing with a small screwdriver and pull the ignition switch out of the lock housing. In vehicles with the keyless entry system, to remove the center console, unconnect the electrical connector of the switch, cut tabs on the switch, and remove it out of the console, and vice versa. In order to take off the lock housing, weaken the steering column mounting bolts and cut down the steering column, make sure that the mounting brackets are not damaged. Unscrew the electrical connector to the ignition switch and the electronic immobilizer induction coil, and find the shear bolt heads and drill them out of the top of the steering column bracket. Installation is considered as the opposite of removal, which is tightening the new shear bolts until they break at their head.
