Volkswagen Rabbit Steering Column Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when disconnecting the battery and removing the steering column on Volkswagen Rabbit?
    A:
When disconnection of the battery occurs, a number of systems will have to be re-learned before they become functional. In order to take out the steering column, park the car with the wheels facing forward and in the case of an automatic transmission, the shift lever should be in PARK. Unplug the cable in the negative battery terminal and turn off the airbag system. Take off the steering column cover and Steering Wheel but be careful not to rotate the steering shaft to break the steering airbag clockspring. Then take off the lower instrument panel trim that is under the steering column then the airbag system clockspring and the multi-function switch. Disassemble thie wiring harness clips, harness connectors and ground wire to the steering column. Clamp the tabs on either side of the cable guide cover and push them inwards and strip off the guide on the steering column. On a manual transmission model, take the crash brace fastener and the brace off the column that has the clutch pedal. Fit the lower part of the steering column into the upper part with a piece of wire, through the hole in the lower part of the steering column, and pass through the spring on the upper part. Take off footwell trim panel, indicate the connection between steering shaft lower universal joint and steering gear input shaft, and then take off pinch bolt of connection between universal joint. Lastly, separate the universal joint and the steering gear input shaft and pull the steering column out of the instrument panel by removing the steering column mounting bolts. To install, insert the column in place and attach the U-joint with the steering gear input shaft and put the pinch bolt installed in place but not clamped. Attach the steering column mounting bolts, however, without tightening. Disassemble the wire that was previously installed and in case a new steering column was installed, take off the protection materials that were used during transportation. The rest of the installation is the opposite of the uninstallation procedure, and when the steering wheel is installed, the airbag clockspring should be positioned in the middle and the steering wheel screw should be tightened to the required torque. Install the steering column position the steering column, screw on the column mounting bolts to the desired torque, reattach the shift interlock cable, and lastly tighten the U-joint pinch bolt once the mounting fasteners of the steering column have been fixed.
