if the battery is disconnected, several systems must be re-learned before they will work properly. On 2011 models, the steering electronic control module and steering angle sensor are incorporated into the clockspring and are replaced as a single unit. Park the vehicle with the wheels pointing straight ahead and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Disable the airbag system. To detach the airbag module from the steering wheel, rotate the steering wheel 90-degrees from center (counterclockwise) and insert a flat-blade screwdriver into the right rear side opening on the steering wheel, turning it towards the driver's door to unlock the right side lock. Rotate the steering wheel 180-degrees (clockwise) and insert the screwdriver into the left rear side opening, turning it towards the passenger door to unlock the left side lock, then carefully lift the airbag module off the steering wheel. Remove the connector lock and disconnect the airbag module and horn electrical connectors, setting the module aside in a safe, isolated area with the airbag side facing up. Disconnect any other electrical connectors needed for removal and turn the steering wheel to the center position. Remove the steering wheel bolt using a 12 mm, 12-point spline-drive bit, and mark the position of the steering wheel to the steering shaft if marks don't already exist or don't line up. Lift the steering wheel from the shaft, noting how any electrical wire harnesses are routed, and if the steering wheel is tight, tap it up near the center using the palm of your hand or twist it from side-to-side while pulling upwards, avoiding hammering on the shaft. For 2010 and earlier models, the steering column switches must be removed in order, starting with the steering electronic control module, then the clockspring and steering angle sensor, and the new steering electronic control module must be calibrated with a factory scan tool. Remove the steering electronic control module-to-clockspring fastener, insert a drill bit or punch into the hole to release the mounting clip, and remove the steering electronic control module from the column while disconnecting the electrical connectors. If it is necessary to remove the clockspring, remove the steering column covers, remove the steering electronic control module, then disengage the clockspring retaining clips and detach it from the steering column, ensuring not to allow the clockspring to rotate. For 2011 models, if it is necessary to remove the steering electronic control module/clockspring, remove the steering column covers, disconnect the electrical connectors and the three retaining screws, then detach it from the steering column, again ensuring not to allow the clockspring to rotate. If it is necessary to remove the steering angle sensor, remove the clockspring, depress the tabs, and slide the steering gear sensor from the switch. Before installing the steering wheel for 2010 and earlier models, ensure the steering angle sensor (if removed) is locked in place, the airbag clockspring is centered, and all of the clip fasteners are locked into place. Connect the electrical connectors to the steering electronic control module, place the module onto the steering column, and press it in place, ensuring the module retaining clips lock in place, then firmly plug in the steering angle sensor and clockspring to the control module and install the module to clockspring fastener. Install the wheel onto the steering shaft, aligning the index marks and routing any wiring harnesses, then install a new steering wheel bolt and tighten it to the torque. Connect the electrical connectors for the horn and the airbag module, position the airbag module onto the steering wheel, and lock the module in place.
