Whenever replacing any of the old cables, it is very important to carry the old cables to purchase new ones since it is important to have the same parts of the cables. Use a wire brush to clean the threads of the solenoid or ground connection and eliminate rust and corrosion, and a light coat of battery terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly to the threads to prevent future corrosion. Connect the cable with the solenoid or ground, screw the mounting nut/bolt firmly. Prior to attaching a new cable to a battery, make sure that it does not stretch as it reaches the battery post. Connect the cable to the positive battery terminal then attach the ground cable at the negative battery terminal. In models that have the active start/stop system, the Battery Motioning Control Module cannot be replaced individually, it must be replaced with the cable. The Battery Motioning Control Module should be used on the new battery cable when changing the negative battery cable on a vehicle that had the active start/stop feature in place of the old negative cable.

Inspect cable-to-terminal connections, searching any crack, loose strands of wires and corrosion; the presence of white fluffy deposits under insulation is evidence of corrosion and requires a replacement of the cable. Always connect the negative cable with the negative post of battery and the positive one with the negative post of battery in order to avert shorting of the battery. In changing the cables, unplug them at the battery and at the opposite end keeping a record of the routing to enable proper installation. In the event of replacement, do not forget to bring the old cables to ensure that you get the same parts since the positive cables are usually in red color and are generally bigger whereas the ground cables are normally in black and smaller.
