- Q: How to access and replace the hood latch and lift support assembly on Volkswagen Jetta?A:To open the latch, first open the hood and take off the front bumper cover, depending on the model it might not be necessary. By opening the release coupling disconnected the hood latch cable between the mid-way point of disconnection and the main disconnection point. For this step, remove the latch fasteners, detach the electrical connector to the latch assembly, and lift the latch assembly off the radiator support, be sure to unlock the hood latch release cable and the latch wiring harness off the clips along the radiator support. After taking off the latch, separate the release cable and hood latch switch out of the latch assembly by pressing the tab and pushing out the parts. Take any required parts and make them available to the new latch and install it by following the same steps in the reverse order. With a support strut fitted, open the hood and place it firmly; a small screwdriver is then needed to raise the retaining springs at one end of the support strut on one end and the same on the other end and then remove the support strut by unscrewing the same. The support strut as well is installed in the reverse of being removed.

For the cable, detach the cable case from the bracket and release the cable end from the latch in the engine compartment. In the passenger compartment, remove the driver's side kick panel and the screws securing the hood release handle, then pull the handle downward to release the cable. Attach a wire or string to the end of the old cable, and in the engine compartment, release the cable grommet from the cowl and the clips at the inner edge of the left front fender well until the cable is free. Pull the cable through the cowl into the engine compartment, connect the string or wire to the new cable, and pull it through the cowl into the passenger compartment. Complete the installation by fastening all cable retaining clips in their original location and seating the cable grommet properly. For the support strut, open the hood and support it securely, then use a small screwdriver to detach the retaining clips at both ends of the support strut before prying or pulling sharply to detach it from the vehicle, with installation being the reverse of removal.
