Volkswagen Steering Shaft

Your Volkswagen steering shaft, also called the steering column, enables smooth turning. It links the steering wheel to the wheel and supports a lock and wiring for the column. Often, it is placed below the dashboard of your car. If you feel trouble steering your vehicle, then there might be a problem with its steering system, or rather, with its shaft. Without hesitation, check it out before losing total control over steering to avoid accidents.

Volkswagen Steering Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What steps are needed for installing new nuts on the steering shaft connecting piece retaining plate and clamp bolt nut on Volkswagen Cabrio?
    A:
The installation will require new nuts on the intermediate shaft connecting piece that will retain the plate and a new clamp bolt nut. Start by chocking the back wheels, switching on the parking brake and lifting the front part of the car in the air using jack and supporting the vehicle on axle stands making the front wheels point in a straight direction. Disassemble the rubber boot of the firewall, the cable tie and the boot of the steering gear, sliding the boot downwards to get to the intermediate shaft. In the event of necessity, it is also possible to access it internally, prying out the retaining clip and removing the trim cover at the bottom of the steering column. Unfasten and take out the nuts on the intermediate shaft connecting piece, slide out the retaining plate and separate the halves of the intermediate shaft to obtain the connecting piece. Carefully remove the rubber boot off the steering gear, and now mark the association between the intermediate shaft universal joint and the steering gear drive pinion with a hammer and punch. Unscrew and loosen the pinch bolt which holds the joint in the pinion and hold the lower half of the intermediate shaft free of the steering gear and out of the car. Connect the position of the upper universal joint with the steering column, loosen and unscrew the clamp bolt and nut and part the upper half of the intermediate shaft with the column splines and detach it. Check the universal joints on the roughness and mobility; change the damaged joints and the shaft boot (where necessary). Make sure that the front wheels remain straight along and make sure that the steering wheel is firmly in place. Line up the marks created in the removing process to ensure that the upper half of the shaft is inserted in the steering column splines, fit the clamp bolt and screw in the new retaining nut to a given torque value. Put the rubber boot in place, put the lower half of the intermediate shaft into location and connect the steering gear pinion splines to it, installing the clamp bolt and tightening it to the required torque. Connect the connecting piece on the top half of the shaft, align the halves, and connect them with the connecting piece and put the retaining plate in place and tighten the new nuts to the desired torque level. Lastly, install the rubber boot in the firewall, fasten it to the steering gear with a new cable tie and reduce the car to the ground.
