These models have an anti-theft radio, and thus, make sure you have the activation code during the disconnection of the battery. Removing the battery may cause problems with driveability that may only be fixed by using a scan tool, and the battery removal may also cause warning lights to appear on the instrument panel, which may need to be disregarded with the help of a scan tool. The majority of the available scan tools in the public are incapable of doing this and it may involve a visit to a service department of a dealer or a well-equipped repair shop following the service work. To take off steering column, it is important to park the vehicle straight and disconnect negative battery cable coupled with the airbag system. Step 2: next, take out the steering wheel, lower instrument panel trim, steering column covers, airbag system clock spring and multi-function switch. In the case of models which have an automatic transmission, it is important to disconnect the shift interlock cable at the ignition switch. Clamp the bottom part of the steering column to the top part using a wire, label the position of the steering shaft lower universal joint relative to the steering gear input shaft and take out the nut on the pinch bolt that holds the universal joint. Once the tension on the bolt has been relieved, disassemble the universal joint with the steering gear input shaft and the steering column mounting bolts then lead the column out of the instrument panel. To install, insert the column into the slot, attach the U-joint to the steering gear input shaft, and attach the mounting bolts but do not tighten them. Take out the wire used to hold the column, and in case a new steering column had been installed, remove the transport protection rod and clip. Install U-joint bolt and screw on the nut tightening it up to recommended torque. Installation Complete the removal steps by reversing, making sure that the airbag clock spring is centered when fitting the steering wheel and adjust the column to align the gaps between the trim panels then tightening column mounting bolts according to the recommended torque.
