- Q: How to drain and replace the transmission filter and fluid at specified intervals on Volkswagen Jetta?A:The transmission fluid must also be drained and replaced at certain intervals always making sure that the job is done when all has cooled down. You will need to buy the following transmission fluid beforehand. One will need jackstands to prop the car up on, a drain pan that can hold various quarts, newspapers, and clean rags. Lift the front and rear of the car safely on jackstands, and then lift the splash shield that is under the engine, and the engine cover/air filter housing. Loose and disconnect the battery and battery tray, place a drain pan and rags beneath the transmission. With an open-end wrench, it is necessary to loosen the filter housing but leave it in place so that the oil in the housing will flow back into the transaxle. Un screw the filter element, filter housing and O-ring and remove the filter element. Wipe the filter housing and replace O-ring. Wipe the end of the new filter element with DSG oil and fit in place with its locating arrow facing down into the transaxle. Apply DSG oil to the O-ring of the filter housing, place the filter housing on the filter element over the transaxle and tighten to required torque. Working underneath the car, unscrew the transaxle shield mounting bolts and shield. Under the transaxle check/drain plug remove the plug and then allow the fluid to drain by unscrewing and removing the overflow tube with an Allen wrench. Once the lubricant has emptied, place the overflow tube back and screw it to the desired torque readings to be used in the future. Fluid is inserted by the check/fill plug hole; one special tool is provided, although a suction gun with a sloping nozzle can also be used. Gradually empty the fluid, and then, temporarily refit the check/drain plug. Having the transmission in Park and the parking brake activated, switch on the engine, press the gear selection lever through each of the ranges, taking a three to four second pause in each selection. Allow the engine a few minutes to idle then unscrew the check/drain plug, should the fluid leak, leave it to drip until it drips. When there is no fluid to run out, add fluid until it runs out. Install a new seal on the check / drain plug, re-fit, and screw it to the required torque. Install the splash shield underneath the vehicle, lower the vehicle and install it in the reverse order. Check the filler housing and check/ drain plug after driving the vehicle over a short distance.

Before the installation, the filter housing should be rinsed with clean water, a new O-ring is to be put on, and the new filter element should be covered with DSG oil. The filter enclosure must also be tightened to the required torque. In the event it is equipped, the transaxle shield should be pulled out, and the drain plug removed, to drain the transaxle. Once drained, the overflow tube is to be replaced and tightened and the quantity of the fluid drained recorded later. The fluid is filled at the check/fill plug hole using suction gun or special equipment until all the fluid is emptied, at least 5.5 quarts of DSG oil is required before starting the engine. Splash shield that is fitted under the vehicle must be re-fitted, the vehicle must be lowered and the installation must be done in reverse sequence. Lastly, short driving should be made to verify leakage at the check /drain plug and filter housing.
