Volkswagen Timing Chain

Volkswagen Timing Chain ensures that the camshaft and crankshaft work together perfectly, providing crisp throttle response for each VW engine as well as long-term durability. Founded in 1937 with the mission of creating a car for the people, the brand has evolved from the legendary Beetle to a global lineup that combines clean styling with smart technology. The Type 2 van demonstrated to the company that you could have roominess and charisma in one vehicle, but today's TSI turbo engines combine power and efficiency. By adopting the flexible MQB platform, the brand reduces weight and cost across hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs, then adds a range of digital cockpit features, park assist, and MIB infotainment system that are intuitive even to first-time drivers. Electric models such as the ID.3 and ID.4 demonstrate that the brand is up for a future of zero tailpipe emissions while not sacrificing the assured road manners and solid build quality that fans across the board have come to expect from every VW. A steel link Timing Chain bathes in engine oil at the front of the motor, runs quietly, and locks valve timing in place for thousands of miles without scheduled replacement, unlike older rubber belts. Its compact design accommodates both short pushrod layouts and longer overhead setups, which means the same rugged component benefits the entire VW portfolio, giving owners peace of mind and more time on the road.

Buying OEM parts is a smart move to keep your long-term repair costs low. These components are built to last because VW uses such strict factory standards. At VWPartsGiant.com, it is easy to find genuine Volkswagen Timing Chain at prices that actually beat the competition. You get a real manufacturer's warranty with every single part, so you know your purchase is safe. Plus, forget about return headaches since our policy is easy and worry-free. We ship your order fast, too. If you have questions, our team of parts experts is ready to help. Why wait? Start shopping now!

Volkswagen Timing Chain Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken during the removal and installation of the Timing Chain, Timing Chain Tensioner and Timing Cover for 4-cylinder engines on Volkswagen Golf?
    A:
It is important not to turn the crankshaft, or the camshafts independently whilst following this procedure whilst the timing chain is loosened and thus cause damage to the valves. Without battery being connected, there are a number of systems that will have to be learnt again before it will operate appropriately. To take off the upper timing chain cover, pull off the engine cover off the ballstuds, disassemble the noise generator parts, should they be installed, and unclip the oil dipstick tube. Move Push coolant hose out of the way, disconnect electrical connectors of the camshaft adjustment valves, and remove the cover with star pattern retaining fasteners. Get rid of the gasket and inspect sealing faces. To install, clean surfaces, attach a new gasket, and screw up the bolts of the cover in that order. The procedure of the lower cover removal includes: disconnection of the battery, raising the vehicle, and the removal of the different parts such as the splash shield and inner fender liner. Empty the engine oil, take off the air charge pipe, and loosen hose clamps. Turn the engine to TDC and remove the crankshaft pulley and the engine and support it before taking off the front engine mount. Take out the oil dipstick tube and unconnection of the oil pressure regulator valve. In case of the timing chain and tensioners, unscrew the upper cover, rotate engine to TDC and unscrew the lower cover. The control valves and bearing brackets are to be pulled out using special tools followed by the removal of the oil pump chain tensioner and camshaft timing chain. When installing, be sure that the crankshaft is at TDC, push the timing chain over the crankshaft sprocker and align the colored links with the marks. Attach the tensioners and guides and adjust all timing marks. To remover the balance shaft timing chain, you should remove the required parts, place the marks of the timing, loop the chain and place the tensioners and guides and make sure that all marks are in place before you finish up with the process.
  • Q: What precautions should be taken when disconnecting the battery and removing the upper Timing Chain, Timing Chain Tensioner, Timing Cover and Timing Cover Gasket for 5-cylinder engines on Volkswagen Jetta?
    A:
In case the battery is removed, a number of systems will be required to be re-learned before they can be used again. The upper timing chain cover is removed by removing the engine cover and air filter housing, the battery and battery tray. Relax the right front wheel bolts, lift the front of the car and place it firmly on jackstands with the wheels blocked on the other end and remove the right front wheel. Secondly, take off the under vehicle splash shield, empty the coolant in the cooling system and take off the coolant reservoir. Disconnect the vacuum hose with the vacuum pump and the coolant hoses with the thermostat housing and withdraw the coolant pipe out of the thermostat housing by lifting the retaining clip and pulling the pipe out. Unweld the engine coolant temperature switch, loosen the thermostat housing with fasteners and then loosen the thermostat housing. Install a work in a diagonal manner, take off the upper timing chain cover with fasteners attached, and pry the end off the cylinder head. To install, remove all sealant from the mating surfaces, install the cover within four minutes of applying a 118-inch (3 mm) bead of RTV sealant, screw the bolts in a diagonal pattern to a required torque, install a new cover oil seal, and test and adjust the time of the valve. Removal of the camshaft chain cover seal: To get it out of the camshaft cover, it is necessary to remove the timing chain cover at first then tear the seal out of the camshaft cover at the back using a socket or a tube and push the new one in place and perform this by putting the cover on a flat surface lest it is damaged. In the case of the camshaft timing chain and tensioner, care should be taken, as the timing system is a bit complicated, and it is better to contact a specialist in case of doubts. To start with, disconnect the upper timing chain cover and valve cover, and lock the crankshaft at TDC with cylinder no. 5 and place the camshaft holding tool. Tensioner the timing chain piston and insert a pin to keep it in the compressed state, and then loosen the exhaust camshaft sprocket and intake camshaft adjuster sprocket. Install the whole tensioner assembly, chain guide and tensioner guide off the dowels on the cylinder head, but do not take out the pin that secures the tensioner piston. Take out the tensioner gasket and strainer, then take out the timing chain of the housing and note the direction the timing chain was turned in case it is required to be reused. To install, loop the camshaft timing chain on the double sprocket, place the chain guide and tensioner guide into place on the cylinder head dowels, move the tensioner strainer into place, and place the tensioner gasket and assembly to the cylinder head dowels, and tighten the fastener to the required specifications. Install the intake camshaft adjuster sprocker and loop the timing chain over sprocker and the exhaust camshaft sprocker and loosely tighten the sprocket mounting insert by hand. Take out the pin of the tensioner and push the piston forward to connect with the chain guide, change the time of the valve, and install it in the same order as the pin was removed.
