Unscrew the bolts of the rear wheel, lift the back of the car, and hold it firmly on jackstands without rolling the front wheels. Take out the rear wheel, and then the shock absorber/coil spring and the assembly of the mounting bracket. Disconnect the control arm to the mounting bracket, by removing the nut on the pivot bolt and sliding the bolt. Check the bushings on its condition and wear; these need to be replaced with the aid of a press and special adapters and the arm must be taken to an automotive machine shop. To install, new bolts should be used and the control arm pivot bolt and control arm-to-rear knuckle bolt should never be tightened until the suspension is lifted to achieve the approximate normal ride height then the wheel bolts should be tightened to the desired amount. In the lower case of control arm, disconnect the harness of ABS wheel speed sensor and parking brake cable, loosen the lower end of shock absorber, trace the position of camber adjusting cam in relation to the lower control arm, and unscrew the bolts required. Check the bushings to ensure that they are not damaged or worn and in case they are, visit a machine shop in an automotive shop to get them replaced. Installation is done in the opposite order with new fasteners migrated, bleeding of the brake system in case of A4 models and alignment of camber adjusting cam marks. Should not tighten any of the bolts until the suspension is adjusted to approximated normal ride height and that the wheel bolts are tightened to definite torque and afterwards need to check the rear wheel alignment. In the case of the track rod, take off the track rod-to-rear knuckle nut/bolt, position the toe adjuster cam in relation to the subframe and take off the rod. Check the bushings that are non-replaceable, should be damaged, the whole track rod is to be changed. The process of installation is in the opposite direction of removal as new fasteners are used, the toe adjuster cam aligned with the subframe, and none of the bolts tightened until the suspension has been raised to its normal ride height and then the wheel bolts tightened and the rear wheel alignment checked.
