Volkswagen Oil Pump

Providing steady lubrication that protects every engine part, Volkswagen Oil Pump delivers the pulse of clean oil that keeps the brand's powertrains running smooth and long. From the original Beetle to modern ID.4 electric crossovers, the brand has always chased clever ideas that make driving easy and enjoyable. The company started in Wolfsburg with a vision of a reliable people car, and today it builds sleek sedans, roomy SUVs and futuristic EVs on the flexible MQB platform. VW mixes turbocharged TSI engines, digital cockpits and park assist to give drivers punchy performance and clear information. Constant research into lightweight bodies and intuitive MIB touchscreens shows VW remains committed to efficiency, safety and fun, values that shine across the entire lineup. Inside every gasoline powered engine, the Oil Pump draws oil from the sump, pressurizes it, pushes it through the filter and cooler, then feeds bearings, pistons and camshafts so metal never scrapes metal. A direct or chain driven design spins in sync with the crankshaft to match flow with RPM, while an internal relief valve prevents overload. Built with simple, robust gears and an aluminum housing, the pump also supports hydraulic adjusters that quiet valvetrain noise, giving passengers a calm ride. This reliability lets VW engines reach high mileage with confidence.

Volkswagen Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Is the oil pump serviceable, and How to replace it on Volkswagen Jetta?
    A:
All models cannot be serviced by replacing the oil pump, it has to be replaced as a unit in case there is a suspicion of a problem. With 1.4L engines, you will start by positioning the engine to No 1 cylinder at TDC and then take off the lower oil pan. Lift the edges of the coverinoil pump drive chain one by one until it is possible to pull it off. When reusing the oil pump drive chain doing so, use match marks and show the direction of travel. To remove the pump assembly, remove the mounting bolts of the oil pump, reposition the rear of the pump down, and pull the drive sprocket off of the chain. Removal of alignment sleeves in the upper oil pan has they not remained attached on the oil pump, the intake pipe fastener, and the oil pump seal/strainer. To install, line up the marks on the oil pump drive chain and crankshaft sprocket then insert the chain onto the sprocket. Fit a new oil pump seal/strainer, alignment sleeves and the oil pump assembly and tighten up the mounting bolts to the required torque. Install the lower oil pan, and add the oil then start the engine and inspect the oil pressure and any leakage. With 2.0L (CBPA) engines, these steps should be followed with, of course, the splash wall taken off, and match marks placed when reusing the oil pump drive chain. Once the assembly of the pump has been removed, fit the alignment sleeves and screw in the mounting bolts of the oil pump assembly. Lastly, with timing chain engines, two individuals are needed to take out the oil pump. Disassemble the oil baffle and, with a little help, draw back on the oil pump chain tensioner and fix it in position, and then take off the oil pump. Install a new O-ring on an oil pick-up tube, reinstall the tube and attach the retaining fastener. Once the oil pump is mounted on the chain, secure the retaining fasteners and a new oil baffle and reinstall the lower oil pan, pour oil in, turn on the engine, and inspect the leaks and gauge the oil pressure.
  • Q: How can the oil pump be removed and reinstalled for V6 engines on Volkswagen Passat?
    A:
Late DOHC engines do not need to remove the timing belt and front oil seal housing to remove the oil pump, just remove the lower oil pan, disconnect the large oil supply pipe, and then remove the oil pump; although the oil pump drive chain would need to be removed first to check. Start by taking out the timing belt and crankshaft sprocker, then the lower oil pan, then the timing belt tensioner, tensioner pulley, tensioner lever and idler pulley. In SOHC engines and early DOHC engines, loosen the oil pump mounting bolts, remembering that the bottom four bolts are reached by removing the lower oil pan opening and then unscrewing the oil pump housing of the front of the engine. In the case of later DOHC engines where the oil pump is driven by a chain, remove the front oil seal housing, oil pump drive chain cover and long oil supply tube making sure that the O-rings remain attached to the tube. Indicate the drive chain and lower sprocker to ensure that they are reinstalled correctly, loosen the bolt on the oil pump sprocker, part the lower drive sprocker and oil pump shaft, and disassemble the oil pump with the short supply tube, including the removal of the O-ring. Detach the drive chain to the upper sprocket and eliminate it, and clean all the parts and check on wear or damage, and when needed, replace it. To install onto SOHC and early DOHC engines, clean all mating surfaces, apply RTV sealant, position the oil pump housing gasket and install the oil pump with the lubrication of the oil seal lip to avoid dry starts. Bolts of the oil pump housing are tightened, the rest of the parts are assembled in the same order, including the addition of oil and coolant, starting the engine, and inspecting the oil pressure and leaks, and then rechecking the level of the engine oil. In the case of further DOHC engines, new O-rings are fitted on the short supply tube, the drive chain is engaged around upper sprocket, the oil pump sprocket must be aligned with the drive chain, the retaining bolt is installed, the long supply tube O-rings are replaced and final components are fitted in reverse order, adding oil and coolant, starting the engine and checking oil pressure and leaks and repeating the check on the engine oil level.
