This procedure can trigger a trouble code to be displayed and this will necessitate visiting a dealer service department or any other repair shop that has access to the required scan tool that will allow them to adjust the cam sensor and clear the trouble code. Care must be taken to ensure that the camshafts and lifters are in good condition before being installed and the camshaft end play must always be checked before the camshaft is removed. The hydraulic lifters are self adjusting and do not need any periodic maintenance, however, there is an in-vehicle process of examining overly noisy hydraulic lifters. Start by detaching the engine cover and valve cover and the oil deflector(s) in order to expose the camshaft(s). Then take out the timing belt and camshaft sprocket, then camshaft position sensor and reluctor ring of the intake camshaft. To ensure that the camshaft drive chain is reinstalled correctly, mark the position of the drive chain relative to the sprockets and the markings on the rear bearing cap. Tensioner of the camshaft drive chain should be done using a special tool or a homemade tool. Install the camshaft bearing caps and loosen them sequentially, followed by removal of the camshafts and drive chain tensioner as a unit in the order they were installed, the caps should not be mixed up. Take off the lifters of the cylinder head and keep them in their places with their corresponding valves. The inspection of the camshaft and lifters should be done followed by the application of clean engine oil on the sides and under the hydraulic lifters and then placed into position. Wipe the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and drive chain tensioner, and change the half-round end plugs and new drive chain tensioner gasket. Position the marks on the drive chain with the notches on the camshaft drive gears and fit the chain over the drive gears making sure that there are 16 rollers between the notches. Tensioner Compress the camshaft drive chain tensioner and squeeze it into the drive chain and camshafts. Lubricate the camshaft and cylinder head bearings (journals) with clean engine oil and then observeingly install the camshafts, drive chain and tensioner on the cylinder head. Install the drive chain tensioner on the dowels on the cylinder head and tighten the bolts. Install camshaft bearing caps in reverse sequence of removal with RTV sealant to the surface of the mating piece of the front bearing cap. Install the drive chain tension tool after screwing the bearing caps and ensuring that notches and rollers are aligned. Wipe the bores of oil seals housings and lubricate the lip of new camshaft oil seals and find them over the end of the camshafts and force them in. Installation of the camshaft sprockers on the exhaust camshaft and the camshaft position sensor reluctor ring, conical washer and retaining bolt on the intake camshaft and tighten the bolts to the recommended torque. Fit the timing belt with the crankshaft in TDC position of the No. 1 cylinder and the mark on the camshaft sprocket to the rear timing cover. The rest of the install is the opposite sequence of the uninstall, and in case new lifters were used, wait at least 30 minutes to start the car so the lifters can empty and the lifters will not cause severe damage to the engine.

Inspect visually the camshaft bearing surfaces to determine whether they are pitted, marked with scores, galled, and worn abnormally, and in any case damaged the cylinder head needs replacement. Measure the outside diameter of each of the camshaft bearings journals and record the measurements, and compare them against the outside diameter of the journal and measure the inside diameter of each of the respective camshaft bearings. Calculate the difference between each cam journal outside diameter and the corresponding cam bearing bore inside diameter to give the clearance of the oil per bearing, and compare with the allowable journal-bearing clearance specified, any figures falling within the normal limits of wear requiring replacement of the camshaft, or the cylinder head, or both. Check camshaft runout by inserting the camshaft again into the cylinder head and attaching a dial indicator to the center journal, positioning it zero and rotating the camshaft at a slow rate to record the readings; in case of the runout measured to be higher than the limit, change the camshaft. Measurement of check camshaft endplay with a dial indicator with the snout of the camshaft lined up with the dial indicator and adjusted in a zero position after pushing the camshaft to the rear and then prying to the front to check the reading; in case the endplay is over-specified, examine the bearing caps and in case they are worn replace the cylinder head. Measure the height of the lobes of all the cam followers with a micrometer and record the measurements and relative positions of both intake and exhaust lobes; the measurements applied here being intake lobes to intake lobes and exhaust lobes to exhaust lobes. Check the contact and sliding surfaces of each lifter in regard to wear and scratches and ensure that every lifter travels freely in its bore to avoid valve sticking and possible engine damage. Repairs and re-assembly Before reassembling, ensure all components (new and old) are inspected after cleaning. In case of noisy valve lifters, start up the engine until it reaches regular operating temperature, take the valve cover off, and rotate the engine until the No.1 piston reaches TDC. Clearance between the camshaft lobe and the lifter Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance; over 0.008 inch may indicate that the lifter or camshaft lobe is worn. In absence of a clearance, spurt the lifter to drain it out and inspect, repeat with others according to the firing order. Where clearance exceeds the maximum permitted test the camshaft; the camshaft being satisfactory, the lifters are defective, and need replacement.
