To take off the rear axle, loosen the bolt of the rear wheels, chock the front wheels, hoist the back of the car and hold it firmly on jackstands and then remove the rear wheels and the cover of the beam that is in the front axle. The second step is to loosen the cable adjuster nut of the parking brake and strip off the parking brake cables of the calipers. Take off the brake calipers, mounting bracket and discs, then the ABS rear wheel speed sensors and the unclips on the harness of the axle. To replace the axle, dismount the clips holding the parking brakes to the hub and bearing assembly Passat or the stub axle A4, then, disconnect the parking brakes cables to the clips on the trailing arms of the axle. Unscrew the brake line fittings on the brake hose of each side of the rear axle, with a flare-nut wrench (where possible) to avoid rounding-off the fittings, and plug the hose to limit the loss of fluid and avoid the entry of dirt into the hydraulic system. Passat models have the coil springs removed, whereas in A4 models, the lower ends of the shock absorbers are unbolted off the axle. Make sure that all the parts required should be unconnection and the positioning such that it does not obstruct in removal process, then place a floor jack under the center of rear axle assembly and hoist it to a point that it simply holds the weight of the axle. Mark the location of the left-side mounting bracket to the body, loosen the mounting bracket bolts a few turns, and strip the axle pivot bolts of the nuts on each side and then lower the jack slowly. Check the bushings in the mounting brackets either damaged or worn; in case of damage, a draw bolt-type replacement tool of a bushing is used or remove the brackets to an automotive machine shop. Unless damaged, do not remove the rear axle mounting brackets by unbolting them off the floor pan and in case they are replaced, label the position of the bracket and fit it back in place. Installation To install, simply reverse the removal process, and replace all the loosened or removed suspension hardware with new ones, and fit the left-side mounting bracket in place, routing the brake lines, parking brake cables, and wiring appropriately, and leaving the rear axle pivot bolts and shock absorber lower mounting bolts loose until the weight of the vehicle is on the wheels. Lastly, ensure that all fasteners are tightened to recommended torque requirements, bleed the brake system, and ensure the rear wheel is aligned and adjusted where necessary.
